* Helen Childress was only 19 years old when she began writing the screenplay.

* Original drafts of the screenplay included a subplot involving Lelaina's alcoholic sister, Patty. A few of these scenes were filmed and later deleted from the final cut of the movie, though they can be found on the 10th Anniversary edition of the DVD. In these scenes, Patty was played by Patricia Childress, sister of screenwriter Helen.
